This final competition entry for the Presidio Gateway is an interplay of “Arcs” and “Strands”. Our proposal explores the tensions between dynamic natural and cultural systems, and creates opportunities for the impact of these forces to become legible over time, creating new experiences for visitors and inhabitants alike.
Drawn from the escarpment that wraps the northern tip of the peninsula, the “Arcs” are richly layered natural and urban systems that define the edge of the San Francisco Bay. Key circulation routes move along the Arcs, connecting to Crissy Field, Crissy Marsh, and other waterfront destinations. The “Strands” create shifts and ruptures within the arcs, allowing for multiple ways of accessing and inhabiting the site, serving the diverse needs of different visitors.
