Built in 1886 in San Francisco’s Corona Heights neighborhood, the home sits on a dramatic hillside above the Castro, near Mt. Olympus. This gut renovation preserved the 130 year old Victorian structure and period details while modernizing the layout and finishes. The project maintained an interest in craft, high attention to detail, and strong value for working locally. All the wood was locally salvaged timber sourced from Arborica and crafted by Kai Lundgren-Williams. For the living area, the approach was to create distinct spaces within a modest footprint to evoke a sense of expansiveness. The bathroom was inspired by Japanese onsens, where the dark background provides a relief for the natural solid wood textures. The home is outfitted with modern home-automation amenities that were specified from off-the-shelf, consumer grade components. The final result reflects this thinking - a fusion of historic and modern elements that celebrate the history of Victorian architecture, craftspeople, and technology of San Francisco.
